It is based on our prior knowledge of the pupils and applies theoretical contents and skills to real-life situations. The assessment does not only take into consideration the content but also its application.


SUNRISE and linguistic competency:

Within the framework of the SUNRISE programme, the School develops two fundamental aspects.

On one hand, the approach given to trilingualism renounces grammar and theory to concentrate on the fundamental competencies of comprehension and expression. The languages are learned through practice and by giving importance to daily learning.

On the other hand, we give verbal expression a privileged place in the order of objectives to be achieved. Right from the Pre-school stage, verbal interventions by the pupils are introduced, many of which form part of the project they are developing or by taking advantage of events in which they have to speak in public. In Primary, they present their projects, whether individually or as a team as well as performing theatrical works in English, Catalan and Spanish. In Secondary they receive public speaking courses, defend research projects, etc.

All these means are opportunities through which they can display everything they have learned and practiced in the classroom during the course of the school year.


SUNRISE and mathematical competency:

webentusiasmatA sound learning of mathematics should not only focus on a good command of its numerical aspects but must also teach thought and reflection. At the same time it generates confidence and improves the intellectual development of the pupil. This in turn develops competencies that help them resolve issues that not only present themselves in the classroom but also outside the school environment.

Our aim is to bring the pupil into proximity with the learning of mathematics in a contextualised format that is adapted to reality, at the same time putting an end to the undeserved reputation that “mathematics is difficult or boring”. Quite the opposite, this is a course that permits learning based on manipulation, observation and experimentation.

This is why as from Kindergarten 3 we gradually introduce the subject "EntusiasMAT", a teaching format in which the student learns to participate more in class, through play and the solving of day-to-day problems. Furthermore, it improves the children’s mathematical reasoning so that they do not put forward a problem with a simple solution but rather the child asks themselves why such an issue exists.


Aware that the study of a range of languages is a key element for cultural enhancement and the achievement of a global mentality - in addition to being an enabling factor for the future job prospects of our pupils – the School places value on the linguistic wealth of Catalonia at the same time as stimulating the study of foreign languages. As a result we offer linguistic immersion in English (starting from Kindergarten 1) and, as from Secondary, French and German.

Our educational centre was a pioneer in Barcelona in the application of the trilingual system and ever since the 1995-1996 school year in which it was first implemented, we have been perfecting this formula. 


Throughout their schooling, our pupils study courses in Catalan and others in Spanish so that by the time they complete their studies in the 2nd Grade Higher Secondary they will have fully mastered both languages.


English is introduced in Kindergarten 1 and gradually increases every day until some of the Primary courses have 38% of their weekly classes taught in English.

During the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grades ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education), in addition to the English course itself, with its 3 different levels to prepare for the Cambridge examinations, two further courses will be taught in English.

As from the 4th Grade ESO, and because of their preparation for the university entrance examinations and the requirement to gain admission to their chosen degree programme, our pupils will be given classes in Spanish and Catalan. The weekly hours devoted to the English language course are divided into levels, just as with the ESO, to prepare pupils for the official Cambridge examinations.


From 1st Grade ESO, our pupils will have the possibility of choosing another foreign language from the elective languages course.


The School, through its membership of an international network of schools, offers its pupils the opportunity to spend a trimester, semester, school year or summer studying at one of our schools in the USA, Ireland or Switzerland.


We are an accredited Cambridge examination centre and as from 1st Grade Primary, we prepare our pupils from to sit the official examinations at the School.


The School benefits from the collaboration of young people in English-speaking countries to enhance the level of spoken English in our pupils. 

The RMSI School supports the development of two educational systems: mixed education during Pre-school and Higher Secondary, and differentiated education (single sex) in the Primary and ESO classrooms (mixed playgrounds, canteens, excursions, cultural, elective and extra-curricular activities, etc.).

We take the best from both systems. Based on an approach whereby the educational objectives, teachers and content are the same for both boys and girls, differentiated education is an education system that adopts a teaching style adapted to each gender to thus make the most of their different qualities, pace of maturity and interests in order to guarantee true equal opportunity.

From the mixed education approach, we teach the girls and boys to coexist and promote a healthy relationship between them. We are the only school in Barcelona to implement this system.

PRE-SCHOOL (1 to 5 years)

In Pre-School Education, we apply our own SUNRISE Methodology, in which the pupils enjoy a central role. The child, guided by the teacher “learns to learn” through role-play, work with projects, games, experiments, collaborative and problem-based learning.

PRIMARY EDUCATION (6 to 11 years)

The SUNRISE methodology continues during Primary but in an adapted format. Research, interdisciplinarity, teamwork and public speaking are all promoted through projects. Such tools that are naturally acquired from the earliest age, equip our pupils with skills that they will use not only in subsequent stages but also in their future professional work.


COMPULSORY SECONDARY EDUCATION (known as ESO in Spain) (12 to 15 years)


ESO is a stage of changes and also a time to consolidate what has been learned.

Our project takes into account the physical, intellectual and emotional transformations inherent to this age group. To that end, we seek to consolidate in the pupils the fundamental elements they need to integrate into a multicultural world, instilling in them the practice of study and work that favours self-learning skills and the development of their abilities.


Over the course of these years, we help our pupils discover their talents and personal qualities that will not only help them choose the right higher secondary courses, but also to have an appreciation of themselves, to accept and achieve. For this reason this stage strengthens the personal guidance provided by both the tutors and the entire team of educators and educational psychologists.


HIGHER SECONDARY (16 to 17 years)


Preparation for university life

The School additionally offers preparation so that students pass their university entrance exams, focusing our efforts so that they achieve their chosen university degree.

We offer a flexible Higher Secondary programme. This means that our pupils can choose the courses they would like to study from the 24 offered during 1st Grade Higher Secondary. As such they can undertake tailor-made Higher Secondary studies by choosing the courses that best suit their vocational preferences.


We offer the Higher Secondary in social sciences, humanities, technology and health sciences.

Assessment on university degree programmes.

Given that there is currently a great increase in the range of studies offered and numerous options available, the School helps each pupil by giving them personal assessment regarding the different options in accordance with their preferences and qualities.

We also visit and host visits from different universities based in Barcelona. In addition, the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV Madrid), that is a member of the same educational group, offers assessment and very advantageous conditions to our pupils.

Preparation for the working world. APS Programme

This vocational and professional assessment programme aims to help our pupils discover the talents they possess and the professional sphere in which they could apply them, thereby developing as individuals and working to serve society.

This is a personal assessment will therefore help them decide which elective ESO courses best adapt to their profile, in addition to the choice of Higher Secondary specialisation and the university degree that bests suits their vocational concerns.

There are several means through which our pupils receive guidance:

  1. Self-awareness through a guidance programme coordinated by the Guidance Department throughout their schooling up to 4th Grade ESO.
  2. Personal assessment by our educators.
  3. Professional workshops given at the School by the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria.
  4. Vocational guidance campus at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria
  5. Seminars with professionals.
  6. Working experience in businesses: the Work Experience Programme.

WORK EXPERIENCE Una experiencia laboral para nuestros alumnos de 1º de Bachillerato

El Colegio Reial Monestir de Santa Isabel incluye -dentro de su programa APS (Asesoramiento Preuniversitario de Secundaria)- una actividad denominada Work Experience, destinada a los alumnos de 1º de Bachillerato. Esta actividad consiste en que nuestros alumnos tengan una experiencia laboral en una empresa, negocio, institución... durante dos semanas. El seguro escolar cubre cualquier eventualidad que pueda suceder durante el desplazamiento o en el lugar en el que se desarrolle el Work Experience. La empresa no debe remunerar a los alumnos por esta actividad. El objetivo principal del programa Work Experience es que cada alumno viva una experiencia laboral, esto es:

  1. Conocer en primera persona el entorno profesional.
  2. Entender el significado de empresa, negocio, institución, servicio... y percibir su importancia.
  3. Ser consciente de que debe acudir al “trabajo” bien arreglado: la imagen cuenta.
  4. Ser consciente de la responsabilidad que implica un trabajo: dependencia de un jefe, esfuerzo, cumplir con un horario de entrada y salida.
  5. Tener en cuenta el respeto a su trabajo y al de los demás.
  6. Aprender a tratar con los compañeros de trabajo y con el público.
  7. Conocer los diferentes departamentos que integran una empresa: operaciones, marketing, compras o producción, ventas, financiero, atención al cliente...  
  8. Después de finalizar sus prácticas, la empresa valora el desempeño de cada uno de nuestros alumnos. Esa evaluación se analiza con el alumno para ver sus áreas de mejora.
